Letter from Laura Pontieri Hlavacek (Yale University) to the Rector
Dear Rector Gabler, I'm a Ph.D. student in Russian Language and Literature at Yale University. I'm writing to you to express my concern about the decision to discontinue Slavic studies at the University of Basel. The Slavic Studies program seems to have a very strong attendance among undergraduate and graduate students and it is supported by excellent infrastructure, such as one of Central Europe's finest Slavic collections, a large Slavic Seminar Library and joint production of a highly regarded publication series, namely Slavica Helvetica. Moreover, the program boasts an international reputation for innovative research and for the faculty's productive scholarly works. I strongly believe that discontinuing Slavic Studies at your University would represent a major loss for our field, and I hope you would reconsider the decision of depriving your University and the academic world of such a thriving program.
