Brief der Russischen Akademie der Wiss. an Rektorat und Unirat
Mit Befremden haben wir zur Kenntnis genommen, dass die Universität Basel beabsichtigt, das Slavische Seminar zu schliessen. Wir wissen um die hervorragenden wissenschaftlichen Leistungen dieses Seminars und können uns nicht vorstellen, dass eine alte, traditionsbewusste Universität wie die von Basel es sich leisten will, auf ein so bewährtes Institut mit wichtigen internationalen Kontakten zu verzichten. Wir bitten Sie, diese Entscheidung rückgängig zu machen. Bitte nehmen Sie zur Kenntnis die Resolution von dem XIII Internationalen Slawischen Kongress, die ich beigelegt habe. Slavicists The International Committee of Slavicists wishes to
express its great concern about the serious situation which has developed
in relation to Slavonic studies over the past decade in countries such
as the United States, Sweden, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, France, Israel,
partly Germany, Finland. The Committeee wishes to remind those responsible
for higher education and research that the mere knowledge of a language
without a thorough acquaintance with the history and culture of the country
or communities in which it is spoken does not form an adequate basis for
mutual understanding. Specifically, in the context of the enlargement
of the European Union it is essential that in every member state there
should be proper provision for the study of the language, as well as of
the history and culture of the new member states, without which a true
integration will remain impossible.
